Seeking ‘Warm Spaces’ this Winter

Despite the turmoil within our Government continuing – with the appointment of a new Chancellor of the Exchequer one of the recent changes – thankfully the latest gas and electricity price caps and £400 household energy rebates are not yet among the policies being reversed by Downing Street. Nevertheless, the soaring cost of everything, not just our fuel bills, means some Ruddington residents will still struggle to both feed their families and heat their homes this winter.  The support website ‘Warm Welcome UK’ says: “There is an estimated £800 gap…

A Ruddington legend has been busy again – this time launching her new book about a very specific bit of our village history. At the time of this half-century celebration, Barbara Breakwell was a School Governor (from 2009 to 2018) and also the Treasurer of ‘The Friends of James Peacock School’. “I like local history…

Shine a Light!

As the darker nights return, drivers and pedestrians in Ruddington may be pleased to hear that long-awaited work to replace a missing lighting column in our village centre is scheduled for this weekend. It’s around a year since an electrical fault in the base of the street light at the corner of High Street and Charles Street caused it to rather dramatically burst into flames and then slowly ‘wilt’ to the floor. The top of the burnt out column was subsequently cut off, and the remaining stump covered up on…

Housing Market After Mini-Budget

Last week, The Guardian newspaper reported that UK house price growth flatlined in September with a stronger slowdown expected in the coming months as a combination of soaring inflation and mortgage rates makes moving unaffordable for many writes Nick Aston of Ruddington’s Benwell Daykin Estate & Letting Agents. The latest snapshot from the building society Nationwide comes at the end of a torrid week for the housing industry as lenders pulled 40% of available mortgages from the market after Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget (Friday 23rd September 2022). Lenders began suspending products after the Chancellor’s sweeping tax-cutting…
