To mark ‘No Smoking Day’ today (Wednesday March 13th), the authority which runs Ruddington’s Country Park says it wants to raise awareness that all of its play parks are smoke-free. Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) says this is to further protect the health of children and residents from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Signage is in place at Rushcliffe Country Park so that visitors are even more aware of the need to not smoke in places where children play. It’s part of the RBC’s stated ‘tobacco control action plan’ of health initiatives to…

Did you realise that 2024 marks 125 years since the opening of the Great Central Railway ‘London Extension’? That included the two sections of line now preserved by heritage railway groups between Ruddington and Birstall in Leicester – which are soon to be reconnected in Loughborough, if all goes to plan. Meantime this weekend those two groups, Great Central Railway (Nottingham) and Great Central Railway (Loughborough), are holding a joint celebration for the first time, and encouraging visitors to enjoy what’s on offer at their sites. On both Saturday 16th March…

It’s ‘Empty Homes Week’

Empty home owners in Ruddington are being urged to bring their property back into use with a range of assistance available from Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC). As part of National Empty Homes Week this week, the authority is again appealing to property owners to use the advice and help on offer in line with its ‘Empty Homes Strategy’. RBC reveals it lowered its empty homes numbers by 10% between 2019 and 2023 and so remains below the national average of long-term empty properties totalling 0.83% of dwellings in the Borough,…

A Smoke-Free Ruddington?

Residents and businesses in the village are being invited to share our views on a proposal to expand an existing ‘Smoke Control Area’ to cover all of Rushcliffe. Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) is considering revoking its existing Smoke Control Order in West Bridgford and Edwalton and replacing it with a single Smoke Control Order, covering the whole of the Borough, including Ruddington. The authority says its proposed plan is in line with the government’s air quality strategy which seeks to reduce levels of very fine particulates. This is with the…

Further School Places Disappointment for Village Families

Once again a significant number of Ruddington children have learned they will be separated from their life-long friends – as the shortage of school places for our village continues. Following this year’s ‘National Offer Day’ for Year 6 Pupils (which is at the start of March) Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has confirmed that nine St Peter’s Junior School children who put Rushcliffe Spencer Academy (Ruddington’s traditional ‘feeder’ school in West Bridgford) as their first choice, and live in the catchment, had to be offered an alternative Secondary School place elsewhere. Most of these disappointed…

Gas Works Cause Chaos!

As if the ongoing work at the Loughborough Road/Kirk Lane/Flawforth Lane junction isn’t enough, motorists trying to navigate through Ruddington today had even more delays to contend with. After starting on February 22nd, the gas maintenance work by Cadent at ‘Tavern Island’ – the mini-roundabout where Clifton Road meets Wilford Road – expanded unexpectedly from the grass verge into the carriageway.  Three-way temporary traffic lights were put into use, which caused long, peak-time queues (above). This work (below) is expected to continue tomorrow (Wednesday 28th February) so it’s likely there’s…
