One of Ruddington’s railway landmarks is set for a little TLC this week – to make sure it remains safe for the increasing number of pedestrians who now use it. ‘Fifty Steps Bridge’ over the Great Central Railway line was constructed well over a century ago (circa 1899) and still survives as a functioning footbridge to this day. This is despite the passenger line beneath it becoming a victim of Dr Richard Beeching’s cuts in 1963, and nearby Ruddington Station subsequently being demolished. Goods trains continued to pass along this…

Council Approves ‘Ruddy Duck’!
Ruddington is soon to have its own very distinctive, feathered mascot – after ‘Ruddy Duck’ was given the go ahead at the full meeting of Ruddington Parish Council (RPC) last night (14th May). The airborne ambassador was proposed by RPC’s Events Sub-Committee to ‘engender a sense of fun’ around our village at forthcoming events such as its Summer and Christmas Fayres, the Great Get Together, Kite Festival, and more. They say: “The Events Team are delighted that the Parish Council support our proposal to purchase a mascot costume. We believe the…
Read MoreTributes to Ruddington Golf Club Owner
The funeral is taking place this week of John Pownall – the man who has owned Ruddington Grange Golf Club for almost a quarter of a century. He died peacefully in hospital on the 2nd of May. He was 84. Our 6,515 yard Par 72 village golf course had only existed for eight years when John bought it from original owner Jack Johnson in 1996. He set about further developing it into what is now acknowledged as being one of the most challenging and best kept courses in Nottinghamshire. The…

In an election outcome which may surprise many Ruddingtonians, Labour has stolen two out of the three available seats on Rushcliffe Borough Council from the Conservatives. The results from yesterday’s poll mean that Labour candidates Jen Walker and Mike Gaunt (pictured above left and centre) are duly elected to the Council for the first time – with third placed Gary Dickman (pictured right) securing the remaining seat for the Conservatives. Former Tory Councillor Martin Buckle was therefore not re-elected. The three Green Party candidates received fewer votes in total than the others,…

Don’t forget, Local Government Elections are taking place in Ruddington this Thursday – with our two village Polling Stations at St Peter’s Rooms and The Village Hall open between 7am and 10pm. For newcomers to our village, the one you’ll need to use depends upon where you live – and is printed with a location map on your Poll Card. Ruddingtonians are only required to cast votes for up to three new Rushcliffe Borough Councillors this time. This is because there were more seats than candidates for Ruddington Parish Council, so that’s uncontested, and the next Nottinghamshire…
Read MorePolice Warnings on Ruddington Crime
Earlier this month, we reported a 75% drop in the amount of reported crime in Ruddington during March 2019 in comparison with the month before – with Rushcliffe Police recording just NINE offences. Unfortunately, it seems the criminals have now returned with a vengeance – with the force issuing fresh warnings for residents and traders in our village to be on their guard (please see UPDATE below*). Firstly, officers have been made aware of possible rogue traders in Ruddington over the last couple of days. It’s feared elderly residents could be especially at…

If you have fond memories of the ‘Kite Festival’ which used to be held on the ‘Kite Field’ at Rushcliffe Country Park then we’ve some good news for you. It’s set to return this year! It used to attract crowds of villagers and professionals alike to both spectate and participate. Members of the Midland Kite Fliers Club often attended to show off some of their larger creations, like their 45 foot long Scuba Divers and Big Fish {pictured top, in Ruddington, in 2010}. After a hiatus of almost a decade, with…
Read MoreAsher Lane Gates Closed
It seems the antisocial and criminal behaviour of a minority will once again impact our wider community after it prompted a decision by landowners to close and secure access gates to premises which had been left open for villagers’ and visitors’ convenience for almost two decades. As of today (Easter Monday), following advice from Rushcliffe Police and Nottinghamshire County Council, two of the three security gates onto the private section of Asher Lane have been padlocked again – meaning visitors must now contact properties beyond them in order to be let…

After an appeal by Rushcliffe Borough Council, a popular Ruddington Facebook group, which offers information and advice for village parents, has pledged to join in with this year’s ‘Great British Spring Clean’. The campaign, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, aims to further clean up streets, parks and beaches across our country – between now and April 23rd – and expects to see around half a million people taking action in the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. Here in Rushcliffe, town and parish councils were contacted to spread the message to groups and…
Read MoreTraffic In The Village
Ruddington’s traffic problems are always a controversial subject. Long standing gripes such as continuing to allow parking on Dutton’s Hill were supplemented last year with outrage caused by the unexpected permission for 175 new houses off Asher Lane – possibly leading to traffic lights on High Street. Most recently we’ve seen the controversial approval of residents-only parking for most of Charles Street and Parkyns Street during village shopping hours. Even roads around our Business Park are now due to be to be decorated with a mass of double yellow lines.…
