Framework Knitters’ Museum wins National Lottery Funding

Ruddington’s Framework Knitters’ Museum has received initial National Lottery support for a new project called ‘A Right Good Yarn’. Made possible by National Lottery players, the project aims to expand the museum into an adjacent property called ‘Gunn Cottage’, purchased in 2013, and redevelop the existing space. The monies will also allow vital conservation and renovation works to take place. Development funding of £114,300 has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help the Framework Knitters’ Museum progress plans to apply for a full National Lottery grant at…

Heritage Railway Fundraising Milestones Reached

It’s just over a year since we reported an historic moment for The Great Central Railway – when a new bridge rejoining two sections of the line divided for almost half a century was lowered into place. This structure (right) bridges the gap over the Midland Mainline. However, in order for trains to begin running all the way from Ruddington to Birstall again, there is still much work to be done. That includes repairing the existing canal bridge at Loughborough (GCR’s top photo) for which a fundraising milestone has just…

Ruddington’s Big Knitted Scarf!

Given Ruddington’s famous framework knitting heritage, what better way to showcase our village to the world than by displaying a giant knitted scarf created by its residents on a circular sock knitting machine dating from 1860? At least, that’s what Framework Knitters’ Museum assistant Helen Brownett thought when she came up with the idea! Helen says: “I do make quite a few scarves for the different events we have around the museum, to string up across the buildings and in the workshops. So ‘a scarf along the street’ came into…

Update on our Village Plan

You may remember that something of a milestone was reached last summer with the publication of the definitive Ruddington Village Plan –  your vision for how our village should develop over the next 5 to 10 years. This final version of the Plan was launched in August at the 2017 Ruddington “Summer Fayre” by RVP steering group volunteers (top photo) when villagers could pick up a printed copy of the completed document, ask questions and volunteer themselves for projects flagged up by four years of research. (You can read more about the background >>HERE<<.) The final plan itself contained…

Bank’s Boost for Ruddington Heritage Site

The Framework Knitters’ Museum has announced major new funding from Barclays to help it achieve an ambitious redevelopment and expansion project. Dennis Jones, Assistant Treasurer at the popular Ruddington tourist attraction, explained: “We’re very proud of our multi-award-winning museum, one of the only places left in the country where you’ll find the framework knitters’ working and living conditions perfectly preserved. However, as the museum has become more popular over the years, we desperately need more space to accommodate our growing visitor numbers and showcase our collections. That’s why, in 2014,…

Loan Loco Saves “Santa Specials”

Youngsters can breathe a sigh of relief. Father Christmas WILL be able to spend some time in Ruddington in the run-up to the festive season after all! The popular Great Central Railway Nottingham (GCR{N}) “Santa Specials” – which are always hauled by heritage steam – were put in jeopardy at the start of this month. That’s because Stanier 8F-8274 – the only operational passenger steam locomotive based in Ruddington – suffered a serious failure. An inspection revealed the bad news of multiple cracks in the firebox and a very long and expensive journey to…

Former DIY Shop Plans Approved

Two rather striking new buildings WILL be built in Ruddington after a revised state-of-the-art scheme for a former DIY shop site was finally given the go-ahead by Rushcliffe planners. It’s third time lucky for the contemporary designs after two previous submissions in a similar style were rejected. Permission was originally refused primarily on the basis of “an over-intensive development of the site” and “poor design that fails to take the opportunities available for improving the character and quality of an area and the way it functions”. H.A. Bostock ceased trading at 70 Wilford Road in…

Half Term Trains Cancelled

Ruddington’s Great Central Railway has announced that the half term services planned for February will not be able to run “due to unforeseen circumstances”. It was timetabled for trains to run over the weekends of the 11th & 12th of February and the 18th & 19th of February However GCRN Director Phil Stanway told RUDDINGTON.info that they’d reluctantly had to cancel these trips because of “unscheduled track repairs”. It’s now hoped that 2017 train services will commence on the weekend of Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd of April instead. These will be “Steam Running…
