Man in Critical Condition Following Ruddington Fight

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was left with serious injuries – which officers believe were caused by a punch to the head.

The 28-year-old was knocked unconscious following reports of a fight on Easthorpe Street just after 9.30pm last night (Saturday August 21). The road was closed for a time, following the incident, to facilitate forensic investigations. Rumours spread quickly around the scene that a knife had been used in the attack, but police think it was a serious blow on the head which caused his injuries.

Gareth McManus, of the Red Lion Inn, confirmed: “No one has been stabbed. A gentlemen was assaulted on the pavement and – due to it being close to the pub – we were asked to close the doors while forensics did their work.”  Emma Callow took to social media last night to say: “Road shut, police everywhere! Is the person going to be okay?

The injured man – who has not been named – was taken to hospital where, unfortunately, a scan revealed he was not okay. A significant bleed on his brain meant he was swiftly operated upon by neuro surgeons. Police say he remains in a critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

As part of their investigation, they also reveal a 34-year-old man has been arrested. He remains in custody in connection with the assault whilst further enquiries are ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Matthew Dumbrell, of Nottinghamshire Police, says: “This is a very serious incident that has taken place at a time when there would have been a lot of people out socialising in the area. The victim has been left in a very serious condition and so we would urge anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward immediately. We are committed to ensuring that those that conduct such criminality are brought to justice quickly.”
