Ruddington Rallies Community to Cope with Coronavirus

As every news update brings us more alarming news about the spread of COVID-19 around the UK, and as measures suggested by the government become more and more stringent to try to prevent this, Ruddington has already come together in a quite astonishing way to help out those in our community who are elderly or vulnerable. The impacts of the virus first began to be felt in our village around a week ago when some shoppers started panic buying. Then we reported on the ‘Community Call Up’ just before the…

‘Fork Handles’ Gets Connected

A small but state-of-the-art new property development in Ruddington will again be the cause of some good old-fashioned roadworks this week – as the site gets reconnected to the mains gas supply! The crumbling, former Bostock’s DIY shop at 70, Wilford Road, which closed in 2015, was bought by Ruddington’s Mascari Design Solutions Ltd and demolished two years’ ago to make way for two contemporary homes on the land – to be called ‘Fork Handles’ and ‘The Yard’ in tribute to their heritage. Since then a rather lengthy spell of construction work has been taking place –…

More Free Trees for Ruddington

Rushcliffe Borough Council is offering Ruddingtonians another chance to make their homes greener – by applying for free trees for our properties and the wider community. This year Crab Apple and Rowan trees are being made available to villagers free of charge as part of RBC’s stated strategy to provide “sustainable environments” in light of the “significant planned housing growth” in Ruddington, and elsewhere in Rushcliffe, over the next decade. Cllr Rob Inglis Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety at RBC said: “We are very pleased to be running this…

Ruddington Tree Wardens Wanted

An appeal has been launched by Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) for environmentally minded Ruddington residents to apply to become tree wardens – and ensure the trees in our village are protected and nurtured. Tree wardens are volunteers appointed by Parish Councils to champion local trees and woods, involve fellow residents in tree projects and protect local trees by reporting early signs of insect pests, disease and vandalism. The initiative follows RBC’s free tree scheme last year – which saw over 1,600 trees given to residents and Parish Councils to plant in…

Hike in Our Council Tax Likely

Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) is defending its proposals to increase Council Tax by double the rate of inflation – blaming ongoing reductions in Government funding, combined with a spiralling demand for social care services. Councillor Richard Jackson, Chairman of its Finance and Major Contracts Committee, said: “We’ve made significant progress in reducing the budget deficit we inherited when taking office in 2017 but it is fair to say that making savings is getting tougher each year – and will continue to do so. Regrettably, it appears that we will have no choice…

Council to “Dispose of” Village Youth Centre

Our former Ruddington Youth and Community Centre has now officially been put up for sale by owners Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC). This substantial building on The Green was most recently a fitness centre run by Project Body UK – the organisation selected by the County Council to take over the running of the former Young People’s Centre in 2014 when spending cuts meant that NCC could no longer afford to run it themselves. After reintroducing youth provision during the summer of 2016, the new tenants found they could not make it pay commercially. It has lain…

‘Fork Handles’ and ‘The Yard’ Take Shape!

Ruddington is no stranger to new house building in recent times – with considerably more development still to come – but a prominent village plot that’s created a great deal of interest over the past year or so is the site of the former Bostock’s DIY Shop at 70, Wilford Road. The historic business closed in October 2015 after 56 years – when owners Tony and Hazel Theaker retired – and was bought by Ruddington’s Mascari Design Solutions Ltd. New owner Rob and his team then worked with Justin Smith Architects of Derby…

Refill Ruddington

Outlets in Ruddington are being encouraged to join a new scheme enabling the public to refill their reusable water bottles here free of charge – and so reduce single-use plastics.  Rushcliffe Borough Council says it’s looking for environmentally minded groups or individuals to join “Refill Rushcliffe” – for the benefit of both village residents and the many visitors who flock to Ruddington. The authority is exploring the award winning ‘City to Sea’ scheme – where businesses and community venues can act as a filling up point for thirsty passers-by signposted by stickers…

More Trees for Ruddington?

Ruddington should benefit from some of the thousands of trees which are set to be planted across Rushcliffe in the next three years. It’s part of a £50,000 project which Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) promises will “ensure sustainable environments in line with the Borough’s significant housing and employment growth.” These days woodland covers only 5.75sq km (1.04%) of Rushcliffe, so all the trees we have are important. The reason for the low woodland cover in our area is partly due to the fertile soils and its high value for agriculture –…

Green Belt Housing Shortlist Consultation Begins

Ruddington’s rural perimeter is now threatened with around 410 new homes  – that’s 64% more properties than first proposed. The latest consultation, starting TODAY, is on the suitability of the remaining FOUR out of thirteen Green Belt sites originally earmarked by Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) in their revised Local Plan for future housing development. You can read all the background >>HERE<<. The current shortlist (see new map above) was approved at an RBC Cabinet meeting last month at Rushcliffe Arena when, without discussion, the five members unanimously rubber-stamped the recommendation (below) of the “Local Plan Part 2: Preferred Housing Sites” report about which…
