The old willow tree on The Green isn’t the only big thing that’s missing from our village this weekend. Thursday 28th to Sunday 31st May were also set to be the dates of RuddFest 2020 – Ruddington’s now legendary beer and cider festival. Following the success of the Instagram Live ‘Virtual’ market, traders from Ruddington Village Market came together to showcase their products in a limited edition VE Day hamper to help the village commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe), which marked the end of the Second World War against Germany. If society was operating normally, the weekend of 8th to 10th May would have been a period of national commemoration for the 75th Anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe), which marked the end of the Second World War against Germany. After celebrating its first anniversary in February 2020, and continuing as scheduled in March, Ruddington’s popular Village Market was then cancelled for April – until further notice – as the threat of COVID-19 Coronavirus loomed large in the UK. Ruddington’s Framework Knitters’ Museum is inviting any frustrated creatives to support one another by helping to produce a quilt – made up of individual textile ‘responses’ to the unprecedented events and experiences of the 2020 COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. Don’t Weep For Our Willow

When storm Ciara battered Ruddington in early February, for many villagers one of the most upsetting bits of damage it caused was to the large old Willow tree on The Green. Despite a lack of leaves at the time, one of its main branches was unable to withstand the gale force winds and came crashing to the ground. As the unprecedented lockdown continues across the UK, to try to halt the spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus, this year’s Easter activities and celebrations in Ruddington will be mainly confined to people’s homes plus short trips out for exercise or essential shopping. A popular, Ruddington running event which attracts hundreds of participants each year is still taking place – but has gone online! So, rather than the usual crowds packed into Rushcliffe Country Park today, like many other things at the moment it will instead be a ‘remote’ experience.
