Village centre traders are encouraging residents to #ShopLocal in the run up to this Christmas – with several businesses staying open later every Wednesday between now and the big day. Starting tonight (27th November) until December 18th, Philo’s Espresso Bar and Eatery, The Bottle Top, Ruby Rae, Sweetie Boutique, Summers at Eleven, The Pamper Room, David Richards Jewellers and The Children’s Society Shop will all be trading until 7pm. It was Philo’s manager Jamie Battersby who came up with the idea. He told RUDDINGTON.info: “We decided to do early evening shopping in the run…

Butcher’s Sunday Opening
Trading conditions for independent butchers have never been tougher – with many people now cutting down on meat or giving it up altogether. Only thirty years ago, Ruddington still had three thriving butchers’ shops but, in more recent times, that’s changed. Indeed our village was without any butcher at all for almost a year in 2010 after the legendary David Oliver retired and his former assistant Robert Warner was unable to continue his legacy. However the historic shop at 15, Church Street sprang back into life as Ruddington Village Butchers…

If you asked the average shopper what types of retailer were essential for a vibrant high street, it’s a fair bet a butchers would be among them. Ruddington Village Butchers‘ Shane Ginty helped to bring T W Oliver’s historic Church Street premises back to life in March 2011, after our village’s last remaining butcher’s shop had lain empty for the previous seven months. He subsequently bought the business from original owner Stewart White and has now been running it, with a little help from his wife Nicola, for over four years.…
Read MoreNew Closure Threat For Village Butchers
The owner of Ruddington Village Butchers has revealed that, unless trade picks up dramatically again very soon, he will be forced to close his business within the next two weeks. Shane Ginty says that his shop has run at a loss of £2,500 over the past few months – and that no small business can sustain those kind of losses. On a Facebook post he wrote: “We would like to say a big thank you to all the lovely people who have supported the shop over the years. Unfortunately there are…
Read MoreTraffic In The Village
Ruddington’s traffic problems are always a controversial subject. Long standing gripes such as continuing to allow parking on Dutton’s Hill were supplemented last year with outrage caused by the unexpected permission for 175 new houses off Asher Lane – possibly leading to traffic lights on High Street. Most recently we’ve seen the controversial approval of residents-only parking for most of Charles Street and Parkyns Street during village shopping hours. Even roads around our Business Park are now due to be to be decorated with a mass of double yellow lines.…

A unique and musical Christmas commercial featuring staff from a dozen of Ruddington’s High Street retailers singing on location in tandem with Ruddington Community Choir – the first of its kind for our village – premiered today (Saturday 1st December) during the annual Christmas Fayre! Visitors to both the The Frame Breakers’ pub and St Peter’s Church {top photo} gathered to watch the debut public screenings of the “Twelve Days of Christmas” carol, #RuddyGood style. The several showings of the ninety second video throughout the afternoon even resulted in rounds of applause at the end!…

You may have spotted a tall man with a camera visiting various Ruddington businesses over the past week or so – then asking the staff to sing!? In a festive first for our village, Ruddington Village Centre Partnership (RVCP) contacted all of its Loyalty Card retailers asking them if they’d like to be involved in a localised Christmas music video to help promote themselves and their business. The first dozen traders who responded to the email got the gig! The original inspiration came via RVCP founder Sally Beards of Phoenix Flowers…

Villagers are reacting with surprise and sadness to learn that our last, independent, convenience store – a landmark in Ruddington for over forty years – is closing its doors for the final time this weekend. Barclay & Cook, at 7-9 High Street, started trading on 3rd October 1977 when Howard Cox sold his then mainly “provisions” shop (including bacon, cheeses, cooked meats and loose biscuits all sold by weight) to new business partners John Barclay and David Cook. The two men were already friends – John was a Cash & Carry…
