Police Praise Ruddington Drivers

Motorists entering our village via one of its northern gateways are being praised for doing better at obeying the speed limit than when Nottinghamshire Police previously carried out checks there.

When Rushcliffe South neighbourhood officers last brought their radar gun to Wilford Road in September 2022 they recorded three vehicles still doing in excess of 35mph along the main, built-up stretch. That’s well after where the 30mph limit now begins (due to the new ‘Fairham Green’ housing development) and despite a flashing sign to alert drivers to their speed as they pass Sellors’ Playing Field.

After their latest Ruddington visit yesterday afternoon {February 9th 2023} a police spokesperson said: “It was pleasing to see that during a 30 minute period only one motorist was reported for a speeding offence with a recorded speed of 38mph. I would like to thank the drivers that adhered to the speed limit today and for the members of the community that approached us in support of our presence.”

These regular Ruddington speed checks began in response to concerns raised by local residents attending a Police meeting in The Ruddington Arms back last May which was organised by our MP Ruth Edwards. Along with Rushcliffe Inspector Rob Lawton and our (then) Ruddington Beat Officer PC Kai Kemish, she discovered that speeding and traffic offences were villagers’ number one concern – and that they wanted local police to take urgent action. More unannounced speed checks here, and at other problem locations in our village, are likely in the weeks to come.

Speeding drivers are usually dealt with by way of ‘a Traffic Offence Report’ – meaning they are likely to be issued with the offer of a Fixed Penalty (a fine of at least £100 and three points on their licence), attending the ‘National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme’, or a court appearance.

Rushcliffe officers stress that speeding is one of the four main causes of serious injury or death on our roads – with an ongoing message to “drive carefully and stay safe”.
