Pointers in the Park

If you’re a regular visitor to Rushcliffe Country Park, you can’t fail to have noticed the ever increasing number of beautifully carved wooden signs popping up to guide people to its many attractions. From the imposing sign at the car park entrance – to the numerous strategically placed finger posts around our Ruddington tourist hotspot – it’s now becoming increasingly difficult to get lost among the 200 acres of cycling and walking trails! Helpful signage (such as the examples shown below) takes you from the two hectare lake to key…

Spar Shop Shelved

It seems that plans to bring a SPAR Convenience Store to Dutton’s Hill in Ruddington have been abandoned at the eleventh hour. Agents for the Dutch retailer announced previously that a new franchise would open at 12-14 Wilford Road on March 3rd 2021 – swiftly filling the gap left by our Sainsbury’s Local, which had closed just a month before. Although that launch deadline was missed, the SPAR exterior signage went up a couple of weeks later – even including the store’s opening times and facilities – indicating that all was still on track…

What’s Happening with The Children’s Society Shop?

Whilst our village centre is now ‘buzzing’ again following the return of non-essential retail after a further easing of COVID-19 restrictions on April 12th, shoppers may have noticed there’s still no sign of life at one of Ruddington’s much loved charity shops. The Children’s Society Shop at the corner of High Street and Easthorpe Street closed its doors over a year ago – at the beginning of the first Coronavirus ‘lockdown’ – and hasn’t traded again since. A notice on the door has long been directing TCS customers wishing to shop or…

It’s a Shop Swap!

The question of what is to replace Ruddington’s former Sainsbury’s Local on Dutton’s Hill was answered this week – when a new banner (pictured above) appeared outside. Dutch retailer SPAR is soon to move into 12-14 Wilford Road – having itself been replaced by a Sainsbury’s On The Go only last summer at our Loughborough Road filling station. So, effectively, the store chains will have swapped village shops – although the former Grice’s premises are slightly larger and therefore should allow for a more comprehensive range of stock. Ruddington’s new SPAR outlet…

Goodbye Sainsbury’s

Ruddington village centre shoppers will have slightly less choice from this weekend when our Sainsbury’s Local closes its doors permanently – after just over a decade on Dutton’s Hill. RUDDINGTON.info first revealed this shock news back in October last year, when it transpired this shop had already been earmarked for closure over 12 months’ earlier – along with up to 40 other Sainsbury’s outlets across the UK. However, that was before the COVID-19 outbreak when it appeared villagers were actually making very good use of the Wilford Road convenience store during the…

New Ruddington Businesses Open After ‘Lockdown’

When it was announced that Ruddington would be in ‘Tier 3’ on emerging from the second ‘lockdown’, the news was greeted with understandable dismay by many in our hospitality sector who’ve worked so hard to make their premises COVID-safe during these unprecedented times. For now, the Coronavirus pandemic means our village pubs, cafes and restaurants must stay closed or continue to trade as takeaways only – many with severely reduced opening hours. However, at least non-essential shops, gyms and personal care services in Ruddington, such as our now numerous village hair salons…

Black Cat’s New Owner

Not to be confused with Ruddington’s most famous feline, the legendary Wilbur (who mostly pretends to have no owner at all! – Ed), this Cat is the popular Café which sits at the corner of High Street and Parkyns Street. It may seem as if Julie Smith has been here forever, since she’s so quickly become a major player in our village community.  In fact, it’s only four years since she took over the Mathew’s Café and Deli business and rebranded it as The Black Cat Café. When RUDDINGTON.info spoke to…

Sainsbury’s to Close!

It’s been announced our Sainsbury’s Local in Ruddington will shut early next year. The shock news comes at a difficult time for many retailers due to the COVID-19 outbreak but, in fact, it appeared villagers were making very good use of our Dutton’s Hill convenience store during ‘lockdown’ – with more of us switching to shopping locally because of the pandemic. However, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson has confirmed to RUDDINGTON.info: “Our Wilford Road Local will be closing in February 2021 and colleagues will have the opportunity to redeploy to other roles in…

Hospice Shop Reopens

A popular Ruddington charity shop is finally back in business again – over sixth months after having to close its doors due to the Spring Coronavirus ‘lockdown’. Bosses from Nottinghamshire Hospice decided to use this window of opportunity to carry out an impromptu ‘refurbishment’ to our village outlet, since drain work was also required on the premises. This had almost been completed in July, ready for reopening, when disaster struck: A severe thunderstorm hit Ruddington and the resulting deluge flooded many High Street shops – including number 10. As we…

Ruddington’s New Sainsbury’s

Eagle-eyed drivers along Loughborough Road may have already spotted the further changes underway at our filling station – with a new Sainsbury’s outlet opening imminently. For a village which already boasts a Sainsbury’s Local, some may think this is a little excessive. However, this is a rather different shop – aimed more at passing motorists than local residents – and branded “On the Go!” The new retail format was launched in February and is being rolled out to dozens of Euro Garages sites, including here in Ruddington. It focuses on an…
