Edible Ruddington Returns

With spring very much in the air, and plants starting to come back to life, a community project in our village, which began during the first Coronavirus lockdown, is now out of ‘hibernation’ for the growing season ahead. The idea of Edible Ruddington was mooted just a year ago by a group of green fingered residents who found themselves with plenty of time to spend out and about in our lovely village. One of them, Gwen Eyre, explains: “We saw first-hand how beneficial nature and watching plants grow can be for…

Green Light for New Footbridge

Trustees at Hareham Gardens Allotments have received the go-ahead to build a new bridge across their brook. It’s welcome news for the many gardeners who use it, since the current wooden bridge linking the 62 plots (pictured above with Plot 4 in the background) has begun to rot, leading to fears it may soon become unsafe. It’s set to be replaced with a ‘long-life’ concrete bridge. Funding for the project has been secured from The National Lottery Community Fund, The Jones 1986 Trust and with help from Ruddington’s Rushcliffe Borough Councillors,…

Welcome to Our ‘New’ Willow

It’s now ten months since ‘Storm Ciara’ battered Ruddington from the early hours of one Sunday morning (9th February 2020) with gusts of up to 60mph during the day – accompanied by a period of torrential rain – causing structural damage to village properties and felling or breaking several of our large trees. A subsequent assessment on behalf of Ruddington Parish Council (RPC) discovered the…

Don’t Weep For Our Willow

When storm Ciara battered Ruddington in early February, for many villagers one of the most upsetting bits of damage it caused was to the large old Willow tree on The Green. Despite a lack of leaves at the time, one of its main branches was unable to withstand the gale force winds and came crashing to the ground. Subsequently, Ruddington Parish Council discovered the ageing Willow had become quite badly diseased, and took the difficult decision to remove the much loved tree altogether. Thankfully, before that happened, quick thinking Ruddington…

Pasture Lane Plants Pilfered

Rushcliffe Police say they’ve been made aware of the theft of several hanging baskets and potted plants from outside properties on the Pasture Lane estate in Ruddington. Officers report that the green fingered felons have been at work since Sunday, the 7th of May. However even before that, last Thursday, village resident Sarah Keep tweeted: “Someone has stolen my hanging basket in Ruddington. Keep yours safe!” The thefts appear to be happening overnight. Two large pots containing box trees were stolen in one Pasture Lane raid and would have been very heavy. Police think a…
