Residents and visitors wishing to park in the Easthorpe Street area of Ruddington will soon have fewer options – due to new parking prohibitions being introduced along a residential side road.
Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has revealed its work to paint new double yellow lines all along the eastern side and top turning circle of Cumberland Close is scheduled to take place from March 7th to 9th. The new ‘no parking at any time’ restrictions are the result of a campaign by home owners in the village cul-de-sac. There’s been long-standing frustration that inconsiderate parkers on both sides of this residential street were frequently blocking residents’ driveways, obstructing pavements and narrowing the road to such an extent that wider vehicles servicing the properties could not get through.
There have been numerous face-to-face confrontations reported between residents and car users – with damage to vehicles and near-misses with pedestrians. This led to residents contacting both Nottinghamshire Police and NCC about the worsening situation. It resulted in two consultations involving two different parking schemes.
The first proposal by VIA East Midlands last summer, involving 9am to 5pm ‘No Waiting’ in most of Cumberland Close and additional ‘No Parking’ restrictions for the rest of the cul-de-sac, upset some Easthorpe Street residents who would have had nowhere at all to park during the daytime. Their second proposal in the autumn – a compromise of still allowing unrestricted parking at all times along most of the western side (top map) – seems to have satisfied both sets of residents.
Cumberland Close residents’ spokesperson, Gary Choo, says: “I am relieved that Via has listened to our proposals. This application was only ever to address inconsiderate parking on the Close. This has caused damage and access issues to the residents around the area. We have also asked for the restrictions to be monitored and enforced as appropriate.”
One of Ruddington’s Rushcliffe Borough Councillors, Cllr Jen Walker, who originally helped flag the residents’ predicament with NCC, adds: “Inconsiderate parking is a problem throughout the village so it was wonderful to help and to get some results for the residents that live at Cumberland Close. I really hope we can make similar changes in other problem locations and would encourage residents to get in touch with our County Councillors about any other issues you may have.”
However, temporarily, no parking at all along the street will be possible from 8.00am on Monday 7th March to 4pm on Wednesday 9th March 2022 whilst the new double yellow lines are painted – with stop/go boards being used for traffic needing to go in and out of the street during that time.
