It’s been announced that roadworks responsible for long delays at the Loughborough Road/Flawforth Lane junction will NOT be completed by this Friday (27th August) as originally planned*.
These are in connection with the new ‘Blacksmith’s Green’ housing development. A spokesperson for Via East Midlands, which is co-ordinating the work, reveals an extension to the duration of the new sewer installation has been requested by the works’ promoter, Vistry Homes.
Via says: “This has been granted until Monday (30th August) for the works in this junction to be completed, as there will be little benefit to the road user to cause yet more disruption on a future occasion if there is an opportunity to complete the sewer works now. The expectation is that these lights are to be manually controlled from 0700-1900, to aid the tidal flow of traffic, and phase the temporary signals to favour the A60 if practicable.”
The statement adds: “We apologise for the impact that these works are having, but we are trying to time works such as these to have the least impact, balanced against enabling the works to take place.”
Whilst the volume of traffic should be less on Bank Holiday Monday, it does now clash with ‘RuddFest’ weekend. It also adds to months’ of misery for motorists and Loughborough Road residents – who’ve endured cars queuing outside their homes during major work at the Loughborough Road/Mere Way roundabout, too, to create access to the ‘Lace Fields’ development.
Moreover, that’s not the end of the story! Temporary traffic lights will be returning to the Loughborough Road/Mere Way junction, between October 18th and 27th for work by Severn Trent. Rather sooner, on Flawforth Lane, there will be further two-way signals controlling traffic during September 2nd & 3rd for works by BT. There’s gas work at Loughborough Road’s junction with Kirk Lane from 13th to 15th September and water work on the A60 near Ashworth Avenue for the three days after that.
Then, from September 27th to 29th, Flawforth Lane will be completely CLOSED again, adjacent to ‘Blacksmith’s Green’, for more Severn Trent Water work.
