Roundabout Now?

Construction of a new roundabout in Ruddington is finally set to begin after being delayed almost six months by a failure to consult properly with affected properties.

Clifton Road before roundaboutOriginally work was due to start on the 26th of July last year at the Wilford Road/Clifton Road junction and should have been completed by the end of the school summer holidays.

Following a four week consultation Nottinghamshire County Council rubber-stamped their new parking and waiting restrictions at a Highways meeting in October.  These include new double yellow lines in front of the Victoria Tavern Inn and adjacent houses on Wilford Road – and also the extension of double yellow lines in front of Victoria Court on Clifton Road. Additionally the bus stop on Clifton Road is being turned into a Bus Stop Clearway where stopping by all vehicles, except buses, will be prevented at all times. Those speaking out against the plans included landlady of  The Vic, Lindsey Flint, who commented on Facebook: “Given that we are not allowed to park at the rear of our premises – and will then lose the few spaces at the front – will arrangements be made to allow us as residents, NOT my customers, to be able to park elsewhere?”

And Rob Mascari of Mascari Kitchens tweeted: “So what is the plan for accommodating parking for the affected residents? Another truly farcical decision when better options are doable.”

Certainly the “rural” feel of Ruddington is unlikely to be enhanced by this latest new road layout to cope with the ever increasing volumes of traffic passing through our village.  But it’s hoped the change from a T-junction to a mini-roundabout will alleviate the current delays for traffic turning on to Wilford Road from Clifton Road at peak times.

The work is being funded by Bellway Homes as part of their Section 106 agreement after being granted planning permission for further new housing along Pasture Lane.

Seven weeks of delays and disruption for motorists are expected during the construction of the new roundabout from next Monday (9th of January) until Friday the 24th of February.
