Further Disruptive Ruddington Roadworks Announced

The patience of Ruddington’s long-suffering motorists is to be tested yet again between now and next Easter with a raft of different highway works taking place in our village.

The most significant ones, liable to cause the biggest delays, are associated with the long-awaited junction layout improvements at the Kirk Lane/Loughborough Road/Flawforth Lane traffic lights*. These works to add extra turning lanes there started in July, with preparatory work by National Grid. The package of agreed improvements is now continuing – as all the different parties undertake their respective tasks. Although VIA East Midlands says work has been co-ordinated to minimise disruption to road users, given the volume of traffic each day the next phase starting this week is likely to create around five months of tailbacks.

Traffic Queues on Loughborough Road northbound towards the busy junction

This is for water main pipe replacement work by Severn Trent from Monday 14th August 2023 until Friday 19th January 2024, with 24-hour multi-way temporary traffic lights controlling traffic for much of this time. Most households in Ruddington have received a letter from the water company apologising for any convenience its works will cause. This is in addition to further, concurrent work at the junction by National Grid (21st to 31st August then 7th to 15th September and 12th to 15th September 2023) with more contractors still to be booked up until the estimated “end date” of 31st March 2024.

Layout changes to the busy junction

As if the above is not frustrating enough, another of Ruddington’s busiest roads will see the return of temporary traffic lights this autumn for major gas work**. Cadent is to carry out essential maintenance on Wilford Road to finally replace the troublesome old iron gas mains under ‘Dutton’s Hill’ with “more durable” plastic pipes – which will apparently take a whole month! Between October 16th and November 13th, delays through our village at peak times are inevitable.
