Villagers who use Ruddington’s closest household waste recycling centre in West Bridgford are being warned that, from the start of next month, we won’t be able just to turn up there!
That’s because Nottinghamshire County Council is introducing a new, trial, online booking system for residents needing to visit the Rugby Road facility, which will begin on September 1st 2020.
Councillor Phil Rostance, Vice Chairman of the Communities and Place Committee at the County Council, explains: “When we reopened the site back in June we implemented temporary traffic management arrangements to minimise the queues on Rugby Road due to a number of road safety concerns. However, since COVID-19 restrictions have been relaxed further, and local businesses and facilities have reopened, including the Rushcliffe Arena, maintaining this temporary traffic management solution is no longer possible.”
Cllr Rostance continues: “We have listened to the concerns of local families and the wider community and will instead trial an online booking system to control visits to the site in a safe and managed way. Safety is our number one concern and I’d like to thank all users of the site for working with us during these difficult times.”
The Rugby Road recycling centre will be accepting pre-booked vehicles only from Tuesday September 1st. Pre booked 15-minute time slots will start at 8.15am and run until 7.45pm every day during the summer opening hours, with five vehicles allowed on site at any one time.
Residents must already be registered to use Nottinghamshire County Council’s recycling centres, then booking a slot will be via the Council’s online portal using your existing details. Slots will be bookable two weeks in advance but no later than 24 hours before you wish to visit. Without an electronic or paper copy of your emailed booking receipt the Council says you will not be allowed access to the site.
Additionally, residents are requested not to make multiple bookings, but instead use other sites if they need to visit more than once in any two-week period. The Council says its 11 other sites can continue to be used without an appointment. This is leading to concerns that making recycling more difficult could result in further illegal dumping of rubbish around Ruddington, as happened during the Coronavirus ‘lockdown’, when all the Council’s waste sites were closed. Tim Martin comments: “I can only see this increasing the fly-tipping problems, I am afraid.”
‘Social distancing’ measures remain in place onsite at the Rugby Road recycling centre. Further information and details on how to book can be found at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/booktorecycle or by ‘phoning the Council’s customer service centre on 0300 500 8080 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday. The latter is also an option to secure your slot if you’re unable to complete the booking online.
Ruddington residents merely wishing to recycle glass or clothing are reminded they can do so much closer to home by using the Bottle Banks and Clothes/Shoe Banks at the Parish Council’s (Co-op) car park off Church Street. Paper, cardboard and some plastics and metals can be recycled in our domestic blue bin, which is collected fortnightly, and is free. Householders with garden waste can sign up for Rushcliffe Borough Council’s optional green bin, which now costs £40 per year.
ALSO there are ‘Recycling On The Go’ bins elsewhere around our village for cans and plastic bottles, such as those at Rushcliffe Country Park and in front of Ruddington War Memorial (below).
