Several ‘Mustard Seed’ supporters are busy getting physical this summer to raise money to send a shipping container full of school equipment and other items to Teso, Uganda.
‘The Mustard Seed Project’ is a Ruddington fundraising group set up by James Peacock Infants School teachers Sally Squires and Jayne Henson – inspired by a visit to Uganda in the Summer of last year. Their aims are to raise funds to provide clean water, food and an education for children in the African country by bringing the local community together in fundraising for, and establishing links with, the community and schools in Teso.
Fundraiser Charlene Robinson told RUDDINGTON.info: “We have 10+ runners entered into the Ikano Robin Hood Half and Full Marathon on Sunday the 24th of September who are spending the summer training and getting sponsorship. Among them are Mike Robinson (pictured top) – who’s is now turned fifty and running his 20th marathon – and Sally Squires herself. We also have school pupils, inspired by assemblies about the Mustard Seed Project, who have entered the mini marathon. Running 1.5miles is an amazing achievement for a 6 year old!”
So, if you’re heading to the Victoria Embankment that day, look out for them in their Mustard Seed running shirts as sponsored by Ruddington’s White Horse pub. You can also support them by sponsoring the team at https://www.justgiving.com/teams/Mustardseedrunners.
Sally says: “Once shipped the actual container will be used as a classroom or library for local schools in Kumi (like the one in the picture below). To fill this huge container we are looking for donations of school furniture, cycles, tools, books, sewing machines, medical equipment (crutches, wheelchairs etc) , games, bed sheets and anything that you think might lead to sustainable development or make a difference.”
Meanwhile Julie Allen, a teaching assistant at James Peacock School, is going one better by leaping from a plane on a skydive to raise money! Originally due to take place on Tuesday the 29th of August, her jump has now been rescheduled for Friday September the 1st, weather permitting. She says: “I have been involved with the Mustard Seed Project for the last year. I have helped and organised many of the fundraising events. Now it is time to do something that challenges me and takes me out of my comfort zone in order to help others.” ‘Jumping Jules’ can still be sponsored via https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/julie-allen23.
