Celebrating All That’s Great About Ruddington

Ruddington is set for a major celebration – straight after the next monthly Village Market on Saturday 2nd October – which organisers are calling ‘RuddBEST’!

Organised by St Peter’s Church in association with Ruddington Parish Council it will see events taking place across The Green and campus of the Parish Church throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. It will focus on all that’s GREAT about living in Ruddington and being part of our village community.

St Peter’s Church Pioneer Minister, Jane Gray, recalls: “Back in the dim and distant past of Lockdown 1 (or was 2, 3 or 4?) we had a dream. A dream to be a community again, to have fun, to be with those we care about, to remember those we lost, to mark what has been one of the most traumatic events of recent years. To get back to some sort of normality: together. Out of that dream, RuddBEST was born. Planned and run entirely by volunteers, the event is non-profit making and run by the people of Ruddington, for the people of Ruddington.”

As shown on the official poster above, attractions will include Games on the Green, a Fun Dog Show, Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Traditional Tea Dances, Little ‘Ps’ go Wild, Best Scarecrow Competition, Bring and Share What You’ve Grown (allotment swap shop), Ruddington Community Choir, live music, Pause to Ponder stations, Ruddington’s belly dancers, storytelling and comedy skits. It will all be rounded off with a community supper followed by live jazz in the church, where you’re invited to take your own alcohol.

Andrew the Vicar

Vicar of Ruddington, Revd Andrew Buchanan, adds: “After what has been such a difficult 18 months, we simply wanted RuddBEST to be a catalyst for Ruddington to have some fun! Everything we are doing, from the dog show to the jazz evening, is designed to bring people together. My most heartfelt prayer is that on the 2nd of October we would all enjoy having a laugh whilst making some new friends.”

Ahead of the event, Ruddington Parish Council is seeking entries for both the Fun Dog Show and Scarecrow Competition. The former, taking place from 2.30pm, has categories for ‘Cutest Dog’, ‘Waggiest Tail’, ‘Best Dog Trick’ and ‘Best Dog and Owner Lookalike’! Entry forms are available now from The Pet Pantry on High Street – which is also donating the prizes.

For the Scarecrow Competition – which is open to all children who live in Ruddington aged 12 or under – the ‘theme’ is a cartoon or fantasy character. It must be no more that 2 feet (60cm) tall. There are three entry categories:
  • Nursery (up to 4 years old)
  • Infant (5 – 8 years old)
  • Junior (8 – 12 years old)

There’s a £20 voucher to be won for the best scarecrow in each category. To enter you need to email the Parish Council via office@ruddingtonparishcouncil.gov.uk or ‘phone 0115 914 6660 giving your name and which category you’re entering by the deadline of Sunday 26th September. Entries will then be displayed on the railings of St Peter’s on the day – Saturday 2nd October 2021 from 12.30pm.
