New Emergency Work on Dutton’s Hill

Following a number of gas leaks in recent years, RUDDINGTON.info has previously warned that Cadent Gas will need to carry out substantial maintenance on Wilford Road to replace the troublesome old iron gas main under ‘Dutton’s Hill’ (pictured top) with a “more durable” plastic pipe as soon as possible.

Please read the important update below!*

This was due to have happened between 16th October and 13th November 2023, however would have been going on at the same time as junction layout improvements at the Kirk Lane/Loughborough Road/Flawforth Lane crossroads, which are already causing major peak-time hold-ups for Ruddington motorists and bus services.

Consequently Via East Midlands made the decision to postpone it, telling RUDDINGTON.info: “The gas mains replacement, requiring the use of temporary signals, has not yet been granted to go ahead, due to the ongoing pressures in Ruddington and the complex issues relating to traffic management. I have been in discussions with Cadent about the best way to carry out the essential works whilst minimising the impact to road users. However, whilst no satisfactory solution has been found, I have asked them to delay that project until we find an acceptable solution.”

Now it  seems a new gas escape along that busy section of Wilford Road has given Via no option but to agree further restrictions and traffic management through Dutton’s Hill, which will begin this Sunday, whilst yet more temporary repairs are carried out. ‘No parking’ enforcement is already in place there, to be followed by 2-way 24-hour temporary traffic lights being put into use from Sunday 19th November until Wednesday 22nd November whilst Cadent tries to trace and fix the latest leak.

* UPDATE: Cadent says problems with tracing and repairing this gas escape means the temporary traffic lights will now remain in place here until Monday 27th November 2023.

As before (photos above and below), it’s likely this will cause significant delays for motorists at peak time, and so drivers are being advised  to choose a different route for the duration, if you can.
