Digging Begins for “Lace Gardens”

Ten months after being granted planning permission by Rushcliffe Borough Council preparations have begun for the construction of another Ruddington housing development.

“Lace Gardens” will see another 28 new homes built in Ruddington at the corner of Brookside Road and Woodhouse Gardens – with the demolition of the current Malmic Lace factory building and two existing houses on the site.  All but four of the new homes to be built there will be accessed via a single route off Brookside Road.

Lace_Gardens_PlanDuring the consultation process some local residents had objected to the plans – mainly on the basis of increased traffic and parking along an already congested route.  The recent estates built at Woodhouse Gardens and Silk Gardens have added to the number of vehicles using Camelot Street – which already took traffic from around a hundred long established homes along Brookside Road, Brookside Gardens, Fairham Close and Grange Avenue. Also, the new and old estates will all have to share the existing, single Camelot Street access entering and exiting the busy Clifton Road junction. Nevertheless, after several revisions, Dwell Developments had its planning application granted – subject to a Section 106 agreement and beginning construction within three years.

Meantime it is understood that Malmic Lace asked for nine months’ grace to relocate its factory elsewhere. However, ten months on, it’s still there – despite the fact that most of the new homes are already sold! Consequently it appears some building will begin on the former green space alongside the factory for now – which is where the bulldozers have moved in – until the factory itself is vacated and can be demolished.

When it is knocked down local residents will lose the O2 mobile ‘phone mast currently attached to the building. But an application by Clarke Telecom to construct a new mast alongside Wilford Road is currently being considered.

We’ll keep you posted as work progresses! The full plans for “Lace Gardens” can be viewed on the Rushcliffe Borough Council Planning Website – Reference Number 15/01793/FUL.
