Bowls Club Centenary Celebrations

Another special milestone in our village history will be reached during 2024 – when Ruddington Bowls Club celebrates a hundred years.

When it was founded in 1924, it was originally called ‘Ruddington (Paget) Bowls Club’, as the land it occupied had been donated by the Paget family. However, just ten years’ later, the club moved to the Green at Elms Park, on grounds owned by Ruddington Parish Council, where it remains to this very day.

Outrageous as it seems now, women were not allowed to play bowls there until 1960, and construction of its Pavilion (pictured top) had to wait until 1964. Otherwise, refreshingly little has changed during the past century!

Whilst all’s fairly quiet there until the new season begins at the end of next month, plans are well underway behind the scenes to celebrate the club’s centenary in style this summer. The pavilion itself is currently getting a lick of new paint, and the gardens around the rinks receiving some attention, in readiness for the very special year.

Publicity officer Sharon Holden reveals: “Our Centenary Recruitment Day is on Sunday 5th May from 2pm to 4pm at Ruddington Bowls Club, Elms Park, NG11 6GU. All are welcome to try bowls for free. Please bring flat soled shoes/trainers. Further recruitment drives will then take place on the 19th and 26th May at the same venue and times.”

RUDDINGTON.info will bring you further information, and some new photos, at the start of May.
