The Artex Ltd site on Pasture Lane in Ruddington will be fossil fuel-free by the end of the year, thanks to the installation of a biomass heating system.
The new system will heat their warehouses, offices and hot water to remove diesel and gas and fully decarbonise their site.
Pellet silos are currently being constructed and will feed wooden pellets into the furnace, warming the air in the system which is then distributed through air vents into the warehouse and fed into the office central heating system.
Installation is in its final stages and will be completed in the next couple of weeks, followed by a period of testing and decommission and removal of the current diesel heating system and gas boilers.
The new heating system will reduce carbon emissions by up to 150 tonnes per year and will improve the working environment for colleagues as well as air quality for the local community.
Artex have committed to becoming a net zero site by 2024 and are also leading with several other sustainability initiatives to help them achieve this;
- Transition of their HGV fleet to hydro-treated vegetable oil, a biofuel with 90% reduced CO2 emissions
- All electricity on site sourced from wind-power
- Fork-lift trucks replaced with electric alternatives
- Switching to LED lighting
- Replacing the roof in their bulk warehouse to improve insulation and energy efficiency
