Ambitious Former DIY Shop Plans

There could soon be two rather striking new buildings in Ruddington if a state-of-the-art scheme for a former DIY shop site is given the go-ahead by Rushcliffe planners.

H.A. Bostock ceased trading at 70 Wilford Road last year after 56 years – when owners Tony and Hazel Theaker retired.  You can read their story HERE.

The property was put up for sale with outline planning permission already granted to demolish the existing building (left) and for two traditional three-storey semi-detached homes to be built there. However it was bought by Mascari Design Solutions Ltd who have spent most of the past year working with Justin Smith Architects of Derby drawing up designs for a pair of uniquely designed contemporary properties instead.

Rob Mascari says “We have had two cutting edge, ecological and sustainable homes designed by a leading architectural practice. It won’t be to everyone’s taste but the support we’ve received so far has been unbelievable! Bostock’s has a place in Rudd’s history and deserves much more than a block of flats.”

As well as its prominent position on Wilford Road, the site is bounded by St John’s Road to the side and historic Savages Row to the rear.

This has led to social media comments that the plans are out of keeping with the character of Ruddington.  Nigel King Tweeted “It’s a clever design, but its another inconsistent style for the village”, whilst Tishy H said “Looks awful!…It doesn’t fit with the surrounding area at all.”  However Ruddington pub quiz supremo Howard Gees said “I’m okay with it” and John Howard Tweeted “Think the designs look great – we need more original designs like this.”

Ruddington Parish Council gave its nod of approval to the new buildings at the planning meeting on Tuesday 6th September.  So now the fate of the scheme lies with Rushcliffe Borough Council.  You have until Tuesday the 13th of September to comment on the application HERE.

Rob is keen to pay tribute to the heritage of the former Bostock’s DIY site and says “Should we achieve permission, our homes will be named ‘Fork Handles’ and ‘The Yard’!”
