If you’ve been along Wilford Road over Dutton’s Hill this week, you may have noticed that Ruddington’s convenience store has shut again – with all the shelves emptied. Happily we can report that this closure, which started today (Monday 26th February 2024), is only a temporary one – with the business set to reopen in just over a week’s time following refurbishment and rebranding. It’s been confirmed that the former Sainsbury’s Convenience Store on Dutton’s Hill – most famously the historic home of Grice’s Electricals for over a century before that – will be reopening as a SPAR franchise after all. It seems that plans to bring a SPAR Convenience Store to Dutton’s Hill in Ruddington have been abandoned at the eleventh hour. Agents for the Dutch retailer announced previously that a new franchise would open at 12-14 Wilford Road on March 3rd 2021 – swiftly filling the gap left by our Sainsbury’s Local, which had closed just a month before. Although that launch deadline was missed, the SPAR exterior signage went up a couple of weeks later – even including the store’s opening times and facilities – indicating that all was still on track…

The question of what is to replace Ruddington’s former Sainsbury’s Local on Dutton’s Hill was answered this week – when a new banner (pictured above) appeared outside. Dutch retailer SPAR is soon to move into 12-14 Wilford Road – having itself been replaced by a Sainsbury’s On The Go only last summer at our Loughborough Road filling station. So, effectively, the store chains will have swapped village shops – although the former Grice’s premises are slightly larger and therefore should allow for a more comprehensive range of stock. Ruddington village centre shoppers will have slightly less choice from this weekend when our Sainsbury’s Local closes its doors permanently – after just over a decade on Dutton’s Hill. It’s been announced our Sainsbury’s Local in Ruddington will shut early next year. The shock news comes at a difficult time for many retailers due to the COVID-19 outbreak but, in fact, it appeared villagers were making very good use of our Dutton’s Hill convenience store during ‘lockdown’ – with more of us switching to shopping locally because of the pandemic. Grices Goes Under

Long term Ruddington residents will be saddened to learn that one our village’s most famous family firms has gone out of business after over a century. Grices of Ruddington was actually established as a workshop and garage in 1909 by Reuben Grice (senior) and his wife Catherine who then lived at 12/14 Wilford Road. Initially they sold and repaired bicycles there, even mending vehicles from the MOD during the war years.
