Ruddington’s D-Day Beacon

This week, celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day are taking place nationwide and in other countries which were British allies during the Second World War. This Thursday evening, 6th June 2024, our village will also be joining in.  Ruddington Parish Council (RPC) is inviting all residents along to the War Memorial on Church Street for 8.50pm as the countdown to the synchronised national beacon lighting gets underway. Ruddington Community Choir will be on hand with some appropriate songs as the sun sets and dusk prevails. Ex-service personnel in particular are being invited…

An SOS From The RBL!

After the sad passing of its longstanding Chair, Ken Hicks, it’s just over a year since we reported on the appointment of his successor, Malcolm R Greenberry, to this key role at the Ruddington & District Branch of the Royal British Legion. The UK’s leading Armed Forces charity has a network of branches and clubs all over the country and overseas for its members to engage and participate in social, fundraising and welfare activities. Here in Ruddington they also help to organise the well-attended annual Remembrance Services at the War…

John’s Latest Ukraine Diary

Just a year after their first expedition to deliver humanitarian aid to Ukraine, a big hearted duo from a Ruddington pub have recently returned from driving further donations into the war-torn country. After the partial Russian invasion there, early in 2022, with millions of Ukrainians displaced and fierce fighting from its military trying to defend their country from bombs and bullets ever since, there’s no sign of Vladimir Putin’s ambition to seize more of Ukraine waning just yet. Consequently, Dave Frankie and John Noble (pictured top), the manager and owner of The Frame Breakers…

Ruddington Aid Reaches Ukraine

A big hearted duo from a Ruddington pub, who decided to collect together a van load of humanitarian aid and drive it to Ukraine themselves, have just returned home safely. As previously reported, John Noble and Dave Frankie, the owner and manager of The Frame Breakers on High Street, set off last Sunday morning (20th March) on their epic return journey to Przemysl in Poland, near the Ukraine border. Thanks to generous donations from Ruddington and beyond, their hire van was stacked to capacity with food, warm clothing, sleeping bags, nappies,…

Ruddington Rallies for Ukraine

Day after day we are continuing to witness horrific images on television and online of Russia’s shocking and unprovoked attack on Ukraine. Residential buildings and hospitals are among those being bombed in an apparent bid by The Kremlin to seize control of the independent, East European nation. The attempted invasion has already resulted in thousands of reported civilian deaths since it was launched on February 24th 2022, to the incredulity of most of the rest of the world. Whilst many thousands of Ukrainians have stayed behind to help their military, and try to…

Ruddington Remembers 100 Years On

This morning, at Ruddington’s War Memorial, hundreds of villagers gathered in the sunshine on the date and time exactly a century ago that the signing of the Armistice marked the official end of the First World War. This Centenary was an especially poignant time to remember the sixty one servicemen from our own village, who fought for their country between 1914 and 1918, but who never returned home to their families. Preceded by bell-ringing at St Peter’s Church, and a parade of flag-bearing local organisations including representatives from Ruddington Royal British Legion,…
