A brand new knitted postbox topper and poppy wreath made by the famous ‘Ruddington Yarn Ninjas’ are among the ways our village is paying its respects this year to those who gave their lives to defend our country.
Also returning to the St Peter’s Church railings in front of the War Memorial is the giant poppy, comprising over a hundred individual poppies, which was crafted last year by both members of the Yarn Ninjas and Ruddington Women’s Institute.
The pillar box ‘topper’ outside the Co-op on Church Street is new for 2023 and depicts different military personnel paying their respects next to the ‘Cenotaph’. These will all remain on display during Ruddington Remembrance events this weekend.

We were also proud to create a knitted poppy wreath for Ruddington Parish Council. This will be laid at the Remembrance service this weekend and a donation will be made to the Royal British Legion.”
The Ruddington and District Branch of The Royal British Legion (RBL) holds its annual Parade and Service of Remembrance on Sunday 12th November 2023. Weather permitting, the usual procession of local organisations will march to the War Memorial before the service.
This year, representatives from Ruddington’s twin town of Grenay, in France, will also be attending. The French flag will be flying outside St Peter’s Rooms and the Union Jack at the War Memorial, in remembrance of the fallen from both countries.
2023 is also a significant year for Ruddington’s War Memorial – as it’s the centenary of its unveiling by the Duke of Portland and dedication by the Reverend Hayman in 1923.
As usual, the service starts at 10.45am and will include prayers, hymns and the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial. The Last Post will be played at 11am, followed by a Two Minute Silence. Afterwards, a Remembrance Service will take place inside St Peter’s Church, to which everyone is invited.
Villagers are reminded that a road closure will be in place on that section of Church Street from around 10.00am to 11.30pm to facilitate the parade and allow villagers to gather safely in front of the memorial.
Please note that on Saturday November 11th – ‘Armistice Day’ itself – there is an additional short service held at the War Memorial to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
