Join Ruddington’s 2018 Poppy Challenge!

Sunday November 11th 2018 commemorates 100 years since the end of World War One. To commemorate this, Ruddington Royal British Legion is running “The Poppy Challenge.”

Branch Secretary Louise Mote explains: “We’re inviting everyone to join in the fun, whilst raising much-needed funds for the annual Poppy Appeal. The Poppy Challenge invites you to submit as many entries as you like in any of the three categories: painting, drawing and baking. So dust off your paint brushes, sharpen your pencils, or put your pinny on and get baking!”

The baking challenge comes first and will be judged this Sunday 4th November at St Peter’s Church, where coffee and cake will be served. The following week, on Remembrance Sunday, 11th November, all entries to the painting and drawing competitions will be displayed in the church and judged.

“Our panel of judges includes Mr Ken Hicks, Chairman of The Royal British Legion, Mr Malcolm Greenberry, former Military Master Chef, and Reverend Andrew Buchanan, Vicar of St Peter’s Church. They’re all really looking forward to seeing the entries and meeting everyone on both Sundays” says Louise.

Here are the Poppy Challenge details:

Entries cost £1 for children and £3 for adults. There are two children’s classes in each category: 11 years and below, and 12 to 17 years.

Baking: Bake a poppy seed cake. Take your cake to St Peter’s Church in time for Café Church by 10:45am on Sunday 4th November for judging. You’re invited to stay for breakfast! They’ll announce the winners at the end of morning service, when coffee and cake will be served.

Painting & drawing: Create a picture which includes a poppy. Entries must be A4-sized (210 × 297mm) and must be your own work. Please take your entries to Perkins Hardware on High Street before 12 noon on Saturday 10th November. (You’ll be able to collect your entries from Perkins from Monday 12th November if you want them back.)

Good luck!
