In March, around a hundred retired and semi retired local residents who attended an information meeting decided unanimously to start a U3A (The University of the Third Age) in Ruddington.
Nationally there are over one thousand U3A’s. The aim of this new venture in our village is “to enable members to enrich their lives with new skills and experiences, pursue their interests, form new friendships and enjoy a sense of belonging to a vibrant community”.
At the launch meeting a small group volunteered to form a steering group to plan the inaugural meeting. Supported by start-up volunteers, Rosie Allen and Paul Martinez, this group have held planning meetings and collectively have undertaken various tasks to enable the Ruddington & District U3A to become a reality.
They have decided that membership will be £20 a year. This will give members access to the general meetings which will be held on the 3rd Monday of each month at the Methodist Church. Theses meetings will consist of a Speaker, interest group updates and refreshments. Interest groups will be decided and formed by the membership.
Paul explains: “Each local U3A is a charity run entirely by its own volunteer members but they are all part of a national organisation providing educational, cultural and social opportunities for people who are retired or not in full-time employment. So, if you enjoy making new friends, the stimulation of learning new things and passing your knowledge on to others, you’ll be very welcome.”
The Inaugural meeting is taking place at 2pm on Monday, May 21st in the Methodist Church on Charles Street .
Don’t worry if missed the first meeting, everyone is more than welcome to come and meet the steering group committee and find out more. AND don’ t forget your cheque book or cash as you will be able to join the U3A at this meeting!
