Ruddington’s New First Aiders

Next time you visit our village centre – whether for business or leisure – you can be reassured that more skilled help will be on hand, in case of a medical emergency.

Today Ruddington digital creative agency WigWag, which is based at Martindale House on The Green, hosted a course called “Emergency First Aid at Work”, which was funded by Ruddington Village Centre Partnership (RVCP).

Mark Pinks, who is part of this traders’ support group, explains: “We wanted a first aider for the market, and the thought was to train two high street businesses, so that they can provide first aid support to the high street and the market.”

Those being trained up to receive their FAA Certificates today were Alex Preston of The Bottle Top and Sarah Anderson of The Ruddington Arms/The Next Episode – alongside Amy Mckeag and Sian Smith, both from WigWag. The course, run by Belvoir Safety Services, covered a variety of injuries/scenarios from minor cuts and burns, to choking and cardiac arrests. The participants practiced CPR and how to use defibrillators.

Amy, for whom the course was a ‘refresher’ says: “We have many people in and out of our space when The Meeting Space is booked so, for us in the WigWag office to be on hand to help in first aid situations, is essential. Our trainer Berni Carey was efficient, covered each topic clearly and allowed us plenty of practice time to familiarise ourselves with administering CPR.”

For Sian this training was all new: “Having the opportunity to take part in a first aid course has given me confidence and a better understanding of how to react in an emergency situation, both inside and outside of work.”

Both Sarah and Alex took today’s course because they are heavily involved within the village community and monthly markets. “I’ve always wanted to do a first aid course and this was an ideal opportunity to learn” says Sarah. “It allows me to be on hand and assist the community and the village.”

For Alex, seeing what happened to Danish footballer Christian Eriksen this summer inspired her to want to learn CPR: “After watching the events unfold at the Euros, it made me want to understand and know how defibrillators work and how best to utilise them in emergency situations” she says.

WigWag first began to offer Ruddington based first Aid Courses back in November 2017. To find out more, you can call them on 0115 824 5600 or contact them online >>HERE<<.
