Our village came alive today – with the sound of singing seemingly to be heard from every direction. It was nothing to do with The Eurovision Song Contest, but rather the 2018 Ruddington “Big Sing” – which organisers have hailed a great success!
Hosted by Ruddington Community Choir, it is a festival simply to celebrate the joy of singing – with over 200 members from 13 choirs taking part in 13 workshops and community singing at six different village venues. It started at 9.15am this morning and culminated in a Gala Concert late this afternoon at St Peter’s Church. Many of our village traders got on board throughout the day, offering special catering and discounts for all those who flocked to Ruddington.
The workshops themselves had themes from Gospel to the Sixties, via the Modern Musical and even some Shake, Rattle and Rolling going on! The general public was encouraged along to a lunchtime “Community Big Sing” – with hundreds packing in to St Peter’s Church to let go of their inhibitions, let off some steam belt out some classic crowd pleasers!
One of the organisers, Cath Rodkoff, told RUDDINGTON.info: “Initial feedback has been really positive. We made a few changes following comments from the 2016 event to improve the experience – including hiring pink portaloos! The Community Big Sing was well attended and even inspired some dancing – and we hope we’ve brought some smiles to the faces of local residents, helped boost trade at some of the local retailers and raised the profile of the village.”
Now we eagerly await the next one – in perhaps another couple of years’ time? Meantime, enjoy these lovely photos taken by Ruddington Community Choir members of the 2018 “Big Sing”!
