Tributes to a Ruddington Legend

Ruddington has recently lost a stalwart of our community with the death of Lorna McCullough. In November 1991 Lorna and her friend Joy Murray launched the first edition of ‘The Rudd’. It was to be an “informative vehicle that kept villagers updated on events, happenings, gossip, etc.”  It was produced fortnightly and cost 20p an issue. She edited it for 17 years until publication ceased in November 2008. 90th Anniversary of Local Park

On 10th September 1932, the Ruddington Parish Council Recreation Ground (Elms Park/ Carter’s Recreation Ground) was officially opened by Samuel Carter. Samuel was born in Ruddington in 1859, in a cottage that apparently stood where the current library is. In 1880, he moved to Guelph, Ontario, Canada, where he was a very successful hosiery manufacturer and Mayor from 1913 to 1914. He died there in 1944. Virtual VE Day in Ruddington!

If society was operating normally, the weekend of 8th to 10th May would have been a period of national commemoration for the 75th Anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe), which marked the end of the Second World War against Germany. In Ruddington, a community event was scheduled to take place on The Green on Saturday 9th May. Unfortunately, like numerous other events, this has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. Ruddington & District U3A Gets Underway

In March, around a hundred retired and semi retired local residents who attended an information meeting decided unanimously to start a U3A (The University of the Third Age) in Ruddington. Nationally there are over one thousand U3A’s. The aim of this new venture in our village is “to enable members to enrich their lives with new skills and experiences, pursue their interests, form new friendships and enjoy a sense of belonging to a vibrant community”. Easter Fun in Rudd

As always, there’s a lot going on in Ruddington for the youngsters during the Easter Holidays! The fun starts on Good Friday (30th March) when the Framework Knitters’ Museum will be holding their annual Easter Bunny Hunt from 11 am to 4pm. Any child who can help the framework knitters find all their knitted bunnies will be rewarded with an Easter Egg. The museum will also be toasting Hot Cross Buns on the cottage range, and the day will be filled with knitting demonstrations and fun activities for the kids.
