Eagle eyed shoppers will have noticed that our Sainsbury’s Local on Dutton’s Hill is up for auction – well, the building, at least!
This week a yellow sign has appeared which seems to signal a very definite end to the Grices of Ruddington legacy at 12/14 Wilford Road – where the family first began trading back in 1909. (You can read more about the history >>HERE<<.)
In recent memory the business had sold furniture – then specialised purely in electrical goods and kitchen appliances – with brothers Tony and Steven Grice continuing the historic family firm started by Reuben Grice (senior) all those years ago. But, in 2010, when Sainsbury’s was looking for suitable premises to open a Ruddington store, it was decided to lease the historic site to the supermarket chain and to say goodbye to Ruddington after 101 years. Consequently ‘Grices of Ruddington’ became ‘Grices of Nottingham’ and traded at Compton Acres – then as a Panasonic specialist at 8, Central Avenue in West Bridgford. But, in recent years, the losses were mounting and the company ceased trading on the 11th of November last year after going into voluntary liquidation.
Now it seems these old Ruddington premises are set to have new owners – so long as someone can come up with at least £750,000 – and is happy to sit out the rest of Sainsbury’s fifteen year lease of the building up to February 2026! It’s not yet known whether the supermarket giant itself could be a potential purchaser.
The auction by Barnett Ross is taking place on Wednesday the 10th of May 2017 at the Radisson Blu Portman Hotel in London.
