If you’re looking for a cosy and welcoming place you can pop into for tea or coffee, and perhaps a bite to eat, you must give Ruddington’s Old Bakehouse Tearoom a try! Owner Lesley Wells and her staff always go that extra mile to make you feel at home in quintessentially English surroundings.
Closed for two months earlier this year, due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, it’s now back in action for both pre-booked eat in and takeaway food – with deliveries also still available. For the time being, though, it’s open just three days per week, Thursday to Saturday, whilst new ‘social distancing’ measures are being trialled to keep customers and staff safe.
Lesley has been running the former Horspool’s Bakery Shop on Church Street since July 2012: “I always had a dream to open a traditional village tea shop in later life – and found this lovely building which lent itself really nicely to becoming a tea room” she explains. She took on the lease, then she and husband John set about refurbishing the interior in that style.
Laid out with pretty chairs and tables, complete with colourful tablecloths, pot plants and fresh flowers, it has since evolved further into what we can see today – benefitting from a further redecoration during ‘lockdown’. A Welsh Dresser and other period furnishings including ornate china cups, teapots and plates add to the Victorian feel. Her many customers from Ruddington and further afield continue to love it. Lesley adds: “I’ve met some lovely lovely people and had some great experiences. It has been everything I’d hoped for!”

Opening hours are currently Thursday to Saturday from 9.30am to 2pm. Bookings can be made in advance via The Old Bakehouse Tearoom’s Facebook Page or via the usual 0115 9846126 telephone number. Pre-orders for takeaways are required by Thursday for Friday delivery and by Friday for Saturday delivery.
