Trains Cancelled and Sky Lanterns & BBQs Banned

Whilst many are enjoying the extended heatwave and glorious sunshine, unfortunately the hot and dry weather has had a negative impact on one of Ruddington’s key tourist attractions. After safety concerns, Great Central Railway (Nottingham) has cancelled all its planned steam services this Sunday (8th July).

After initial worries about trackside fires being caused by sparks from the funnel of the historic Hunslet 2890 ‘Douglas’ loco, which was due to operate today, the reason given was “…issues affecting the rail caused by the current heatwave.”  GCRN’s statement adds: “A further inspection will take place on Monday with remedial work if required which should enable us to run services as normal next weekend.”

Not only that, but the parched conditions in neighbouring Rushcliffe Country Park have brought into focus new rules banning the release of helium balloons and sky lanterns there (or on any Rushcliffe Borough Council sites). Advisory signs are now in place – and a spokesperson for Friends of Rushcliffe Country Park has also advised that a total ban on fires has just been introduced: “Due to the extremely dry conditions and high risk of fire, we ask that you do not use barbecues anywhere on the park until further notice. Please pass this message on to any family or friends who may be planning a BBQ at the park in the next few weeks. We will let you know once the temporary ban has been lifted.”
