Will Tips Reopening Reduce This Fly-Tipping Menace?

It’s hoped eyesore scenes like these over the weekend in Ruddington will become less frequent once all Nottinghamshire County Council recycling centres reopen for residents – then businesses – over the next eight days. This latest fly-tip (top) of a mattress and other household waste was captured on camera by local photographer Paul Witney along Asher Lane. Rubbish including a child’s buggy and artificial Christmas tree was also dumped illegally on a verge alongside Wilford Road, obstructing the footpath (right). Waste from both of these locations will now have to…

Extra Buses on NCT’s Core Services

Nottingham City Transport is running additional bus services from Sunday May 31st 2020 to provide extra capacity for potential increases in demand – as more people return to work and current government restrictions are gradually lifted. However, official advice remains that people should not use public transport except for essential journeys – and that people must not travel if they are unwell, show any COVID-19 Coronavirus symptoms or are living with anyone who is self-isolating. NCT’s Marketing Manager Anthony Carver-Smith,  says: “Bus users in Nottingham have followed the government’s advice exceptionally well…

Ruddington Library Could Reopen in July

As COVID-19 Coronavirus loomed large in the UK during March 2020, one of the many village facilities suddenly closed down was Ruddington Library. This not only stopped dead its loans and reference services but also caused the cancellation of special events (Henry Normal was due to visit!) and halted numerous classes and group activities which usually happen there on a monthly bass. The building has not been used since. Nine weeks later, it’s been announced by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Libraries and Archive Services, managed by Inspire Culture, that plans are now…

Autumn RuddFest Plans

The old willow tree on The Green isn’t the only big thing that’s missing from our village this weekend. Thursday 28th to Sunday 31st May were also set to be the dates of RuddFest 2020 – Ruddington’s now legendary beer and cider festival. Like all village events – other than ‘virtual’ ones – it was cancelled a couple of months’ ago due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. However, a gradual easing of restrictions is creating hope that the annual festival might still take place this year. Organiser John Noble tells…

What’s Happening at The Hospice Shop?

Among the recent ‘lockdown easing’ activity on Ruddington High Street you may have noticed the complete clearout of the Nottinghamshire Hospice Charity Shop at Number 10. The now (almost) empty unit has led to speculation that the popular village retailer is a victim of the Government’s restrictions due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. On March 23rd new emergency rules forced all non essential businesses – including our three village charity shops – to cease trading until further notice. However, RUDDINGTON.info is pleased to reveal that the sudden disappearance of stock is for…

The Old Bakehouse is Back!

Two months after Ruddington’s much loved traditional tearoom was forced to close its doors due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, it’s now back in action! For the time being, like other hospitality businesses up and down the country, it is for takeaways and deliveries only. But at least some of its popular fayre is now finally available again for villagers to enjoy at home. Owner Lesley Wells has been running the former Horspool’s Bakery Shop on Church Street since July 2012 and says she has really missed being here for…

Stay Off the Tracks!

Managers at Ruddington’s heritage railway centre have issued a trespass warning – after reports that a number of people have been walking along their tracks between here and East Leake. It seems the problem started as villagers sought out longer, ‘socially distanced’ walks when exercise restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak were eased. It also appears to have been exacerbated by an online video blog recommending this activity – for which the blogger has since apologised. It’s clear that she, and others taking to the empty tracks, didn’t…

Bus Company’s Advice on Face Coverings

Whilst the Government says using public transport should still be avoided during COVID-19 Coronavirus ‘social distancing’ restrictions, Nottingham City Transport is advising that passengers making essential journeys may benefit from wearing a face covering. Ruddington’s main bus operator says this may be ‘marginally beneficial’ in some circumstances as a precautionary measure. “The evidence suggests that wearing a face covering does not protect you, but it may protect others if you are infected but have not yet developed symptoms. This is most relevant for short periods of time indoors, such as small…

Calling Ruddington Creatives!

Whilst their regular meetings at The Next Episode are cancelled until further notice due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus restrictions, a village based art group is hoping we’ll show our creative flair ‘remotely’ by taking part in an exciting new competition. Ruddington Art & Craft Society is inviting submissions by email on the theme of ‘Our Wonderful World’ between now and the end of this month. It’s open to all age groups – with ‘arty’ prizes relevant to the age category and a special exhibition promised for entrants’ art work once ‘social…

You Cannot Bee Serious?!

Since the COVID-19 Coronavirus ‘lockdown’ began, there’s not been much of a ‘buzz’ around Ruddington village centre on a Sunday. However, today it was a ‘hive’ of activity! This was the scene as one motorist went to her car on Charles Street at lunchtime – to discover that a swarm of bees had taken rather a fancy to it! Alex Preston from The Bottle Top, who captured the image above, reported them to bee keeper Keith – who provides their High Street shop with local Thrumpton Honey. She was informed they…
