More Houses Broken Into, Too!

Police have revealed that three properties in Ruddington were also targeted during the weekend crime spree in our village. We reported yesterday about the vehicle break-ins on Kirk Lane. It appears officers were also called about three Friday night house burglaries nearby – on Loughborough Road, Elms Park and Sheepfold Lane. It’s known the Loughborough Road break-in happened during quite a short time period between 10.30pm on Friday night and 2.00am on Saturday (9th December). A torch was recovered on the grass verge nearby. If you saw any suspicious vehicles or…

Snowtime!

With just two weeks to go until Christmas Eve, Ruddington was turned into a winter wonderland today – as shown by this slideshow of village photographs posted to our social media sites:- Our thanks to everyone who shared a snowy photo. As you can see, there was quite a lot of dog walking going on! Although Ruddington was not affected as badly as many parts of the region it was certainly enough to put many people into a festive mood – especially as the snow fell on a Sunday. Despite…

A Goat for Christmas?

The gift of a chicken, goat, sheep or cow to help families in Uganda become self-sufficient is the latest initiative from ‘The Mustard Seed Project’.  This is the Ruddington fundraising group set up by James Peacock Infants School teachers Sally Squires and Jayne Henson inspired by their visit to Uganda in the Summer of 2016 which “taught us that a tiny seed can produce amazing results”. For a rather different and special Christmas present the village-based charity is now offering people the chance to donate anything between £5 and £100 to help Ugandan families living on…

Asher Lane Housing Appeal

Back in April we reported that Rushcliffe Borough Council had rejected plans to build 175 new homes on our Green Belt north of Asher Lane. The proposals (above) were lodged by land owners Space Foods Ltd in January after a previous application for 250 houses on the same site was withdrawn two years earlier. Now Space Foods is appealing to the Planning Inspectorate against Rushcliffe Borough Council’s refusal in an attempt to get this decision reversed. This site was, in fact, originally included in its Local Plan Part 2 as an area called RUD7 – where the Green Belt might be…

Fake Note Warning

Ruddington shoppers and traders are being warned to be on the lookout for counterfeit currency ahead of this weekend’s big Christmas Fayre. We were first alerted to the scam by Julia Towers of Julia’s Kitchen who describes two young girls around the village who’ve been attempting to pass fake Scottish £20 notes in local shops. Julia warns: “They are spending the absolute minimum to gain as much change as possible. My shop has received one (pictured) the florist has received two and Karen at the wool shop also received one. All the…

Barclay & Cook to Close

Villagers are reacting with surprise and sadness to learn that our last, independent, convenience store – a landmark in Ruddington for over forty years – is closing its doors for the final time this weekend. Barclay & Cook, at 7-9 High Street, started trading on 3rd October 1977 when Howard Cox sold his then mainly “provisions” shop (including bacon, cheeses, cooked meats and loose biscuits all sold by weight) to new business partners John Barclay and David Cook. The two men were already friends – John was a Cash & Carry…

Co-op Shoppers Raise £3k for Museum!

Staff and volunteers at Ruddington’s Framework Knitters’ Museum say they’re “delighted and astonished” to have received a donation of almost £3,000 from the Co-op Local Community Fund. Earlier in the year, their ‘Hidden Histories’ exhibition project was chosen as one of the nominated causes to receive funds from Co-op members who shop at local stores and use Co-op services in the Nottinghamshire area, including the Ruddington branch. Funding for the project ended in April 2017 and they’ve just found out that they’ll soon be receiving a cheque for an impressive…
