Random Acts of Kindness in Ruddington

Mystery surrounds the identity of the kind-hearted benefactor, or benefactors, who’ve spread some welcome, festive cheer to numerous households in our area over the Christmas period. Envelopes marked “R.A.K. Random Act of Kindness” landed in letterboxes around Ruddington, Clifton and Silverdale – each containing £100! However the handwriting on the front appears different on some of them – suggesting perhaps more than one person was involved. Maria Watson of Clifton Donation Group helped to spread the word about the generous gifts saying they were a “Random Act Of Kindness from an amazing, anonymous…

New Look for Former Barclay & Cook?

There are mixed views among village residents and planning consultants about bold new proposals to modernise a former convenience store on High Street – which is in Ruddington’s historic conservation area. We reported earlier this month that Barclay & Cook, at 7-9 High Street, had closed its doors after over forty years under the stewardship of David Cook when dwindling trade prompted his decision to sell the shop and retire. If given planning permission, the existing shop (below) looks set to be substantially redeveloped by the new owner – with the removal of…

…but thankfully it’s only temporary! Our library, on Church Street, is shutting its doors after this weekend for a TWO MONTH refurbishment. It will close at 1pm on Saturday (23rd December) and not re-open again until 9am on Saturday 17th February 2018. Inspire, which runs Ruddington Library on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, explains: “We’ll be developing an inviting and modern space for reading, learning, and cultural and community activities. Changes to the library will include an inviting modern layout and extensive re-decoration, new shelving, essential electrical work, new flooring…

Another Ruddington Bus Driver Receives Recognition

Ian Neal, a regular friendly face behind the wheel of Ruddington’s Navy 3 bus, has just won Nottingham City Transport‘s final “seasonal driver award” of 2017. It’s certainly a great way for our village to round off the year since Green 10 driver Badar Sheikh achieved the same accolade right at the start of 2017 following HIS “mystery traveller” assessment. Mr Neal, who drives the Pink 30 route, too, will now be entered into the 2017 NCT Driver of the Year Competition next month. Good luck to Badar and Ian!

More Parish Council Vacancies

Ruddington Parish Council is looking for community-minded villagers to fill more of its seats after the resignation of two further councillors. The vacancies have arisen in Easthorpe Ward and Manor Ward following the departures of Marilyn Robinson and George Ellison respectively. No reasons have been given for their decisions to stand down. However it follows a raft of other councillor resignations over the past year – resulting in a contested election for one seat and others where four candidates were elected unopposed. In order for a poll to be held this time, at least…

Leys Road Burglary

It seems criminals are trying their best to ruin Christmas for some Ruddington residents – after another house in our village was broken into on Sunday. Following a crime spree the previous weekend which targeted vehicles on Kirk Lane and properties on Loughborough Road, Elms Park and Sheepfold Lane, the latest burglary was at a house on Leys Road. Rushcliffe Police are reporting that this happened between 7.30am and 3.45pm on Sunday 17th of December. Did you see or hear anything suspicious ? Do you have a CCTV system and, if so, has…

Festive Foodbank Thanks

On Saturday (9th December) our local “NG11 Foodbank” foodbank held its Christmas appeal in Ruddington’s Sainsbury’s and Co-op supermarkets – and they’ve hailed it a great success. Jill Reedman told us: “It was a cold, frosty morning but shoppers demonstrated the spirit of Christmas by their generous donations. They were invited to donate an item from a list which included festive treats like mince pies and Christmas puddings, as well as regular staples like tinned tomatoes and tea. Jo and I collected 4 trolleys full of groceries in the Co op,…

Bus Company’s Christmas Giveaway!

Ruddington’s main bus operator says it’s looking to spread a little extra festive cheer this year by supporting a local organisation or charity which will be helping its community over the Christmas period. Nottingham City Transport, which runs Ruddington’s Navy 3 and Green 10 buses, is behind the seasonal initiative – but you will need to respond straight away! Examples they give include presents for children who may not otherwise receive them and older people who may need help at Christmas. Or perhaps you know an organisation in Ruddington which…
