A Ruddington shop owner is appealing to anyone who may have more information to come forward after someone tried to break in just before Christmas.
We reported on the 20th December that Rushcliffe Police alerted traders to an attempted burglary at a shop on Church Street – but officers did not name the premises involved until they could again be made secure. Jeweller David Richards has now confirmed to RUDDINGTON.info that his shop was the target. “I was woken up that morning at around quarter past four when the alarm went off” he told us. “Whoever it was had gone by the time I got there – but the shutter had been forced open and they’d tried to smash the window. We think it was with a house brick which was left lying on the pavement.”
However, following a previous smash and grab robbery at 7 Church Street several years ago, the display window had been reglazed with extra-toughened security glass. Although it was cracked in the latest burglary attempt (see top photo taken by shop assistant Helen Jenkins) the window remained intact and secure, and the would-be thief fled empty handed. Since then extra security has been applied to the external shutters as an added deterrent – and in the hope of preventing another expensive glass repair bill!
Unfortunately the crook had managed to put the CCTV camera out of action beforehand and so no footage of the incident was recorded. David is therefore hoping that someone who was awake and around the village centre at around 4.15am on that Wednesday morning may have seen something suspicious but has not yet reported it to local police.
